Rubin & Chapelle Opens Los Angeles Store In Melrose Hill

Rubin&Chapelle, recognized for its commitment to sustainable luxury fashion, debuts its Los Angeles boutique.

Designers Sonja Rubin and Kip Chapelle are thrilled to announce their third California location – Rubin & Chapelle Melrose Hill, situated in the heart of Los Angeles’ emerging art and design district next to the neighborhood’s anchor gallery, David Zwirner.

“We have always seen Rubin & Chapelle as part of a broader creative dialogue,” says Sonja Rubin. “Being in this art corridor allows us to explore the intersection of fashion and contemporary art in a thoughtful, grounded way. This stretch between Koreatown and Little Armenia has a varied history — from historic California bungalows and longtime furniture stores, to former resident Charles Bukowski.”

As part of its continued engagement with contemporary artists, Rubin&Chapelle invited Konrad Fischer’s OKEY DOKEY gallery to exhibit in the project space. The gallery’s fourth exhibition in Los Angeles will open simultaneously with the Rubin&Chapelle store on November 8th.

The clothing area of the 4,000 sq. ft. space draws inspiration from the raw spirit of the designers’ West Chelsea studio, with brick walls, raw steel display cases, and celestial-inspired garment racks that reference celestial formations. “The objective was to bring together the intimacy of an atelier with the openness of an exhibition space,” says Kip Chapelle. Aura Rosenberg’s paintings will be featured, marking her second presentation with R&C Projects.

Founded in New York with ongoing operations in California, Rubin&Chapelle’s style combines elements of New York clarity with California casual including sought-after bias and spiral-cut silk tops, dresses, and jackets. Their design intention, described as “perpetual modernity”, is paired with a sense of timeless ease, creating pieces that move effortlessly from day to evening.

In addition to the collection, made-to-measure items will be offered with a range of fabric options for customization. “We love the energy of this evolving neighborhood. It’s reminiscent of our first store opening in the Meatpacking District in 2002 when it actually still had meat,” adds Kip Chapelle. “The neighborhood’s creative energy is palpable, from the galleries and architecture to the way people express themselves. We wanted to create a space that speaks to both fashion and art.”

Following Rubin&Chapelle’s New York and Malibu stores, the designers’ Melrose Hill location will present R&C Projects, an initiative that welcomes artists to exhibit in our spaces and collaborate.

The boutique will welcome: Aura Rosenberg, Anna Ostoya, Tamar Halpern, Gregory Coates, Wolfgang Stiller, Hermes Payrhuber, Stefan Reiterer, Axel Koschier, Atalay Yavuz, Kottie Paloma, Steven Rose, Joseph Montgomery, Berta Fischer and Mia Enell. Rubin & Chapelle have also collaborated with contemporary artists: Marcel Odenbach, Berta Fischer, Joseph Montgomery, Steven Rose, Kara Walker and Semjon HN Semjon.
