Creating a Tropical Paradise

Rum Social is the brainchild of restaurateur John Fisher, award-winning designer Ken Ussenko, and real estate developer Steve Sherwood. This marks the first collaboration between the trio. Their vision for the restaurant was to create a secret hideaway that transports guests from the busy streets of Laguna Beach to a tropical paradise.

Rum Social’s interior design

Since its opening, the restaurant has attracted locals and visitors alike with colorful cocktails and exotic dishes. The menu at Rum Social is a blend of modern Californian cuisine infused with ingredients and influences from the Caribbean to Southeast Asia.

The restaurant’s interior design features a blend of colors, fabrics, and textures that evoke the nostalgia of a 1930s beachfront island lounge, providing an ambiance that guests find irresistible.

The décor of the restaurant carries a hint of Havana in its dark-wood tables, brass sconces, etched-glass dividers, and sheer curtains draped over casement windows. Upstairs, palm tree murals and treetop tables transport the guests to a different world. Treehouse Bar offers a unique Hemingway-inspired experience. Here, guests can enjoy handcrafted cocktails while gazing out over the idyllic Peppertree Lane courtyard.

Rum Social’s New Seasonal Menu Highlights

Rum Social has recently updated their menu with delectable dishes that are perfect for sharing and promise to tantalize the taste buds.

As Steve Reed, Rum Social general manager, commented:

“Our new menu reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional dining experience, with bold, exotic flavors that transport you to a tropical paradise.”

The starters set the tone for the meal and include a visually stunning Tuna Poke with a flavorful tartare of pineapple pico de gallo, avocado, and sweet Thai sauce.

Rum Social’s Crispy Coconut Prawns

The Crispy Coconut Prawns, served with cucumber and housemade cocktail sauce, are a delightful twist on a classic dish. For a refreshing salad option, there is the Crispy Brussels Caesar with crispy shallots and micro herbs. Another option is the Apple Rum Salad with roasted grapes, walnuts, and mint – a creative take on the classic Waldorf.

Those looking for a heartier side dish can enjoy Uncle Ken’s Fried Rice, which combines the flavors of smoked jade rice, sweet carrots, and aromatic sofrito.

The supper plates are the main attraction. Guests can enjoy mouth-watering options like the slow-braised Snake River Farms Wagyu Short Rib and Garlic Butter Prawns dressed in a brown butter citrus sauce with Maitake mushrooms.

The Striped Seabass, with flavors of curry and coconut, is another standout dish. It is served with coconut rice curry broth, Shimeji mushrooms, and pickled cabbage.

Rum Social’s Beverage Program

Additionally, guests can enjoy the creative beverage program. It draws inspiration from the Caribbean and Pacific Islands, blending modern takes on classic cocktails with traditional tiki libations. Customers can try the restaurant’s signature rums, which come in different types such as dark, barrel-aged, and infused with black tea.

The special discount of $1 bottle Wine applies to the restaurant’s select collection of wines, some of which include Martin Ray Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Rodney Strong Cabernet Sauvignon. This offer will run all through April, and is limited to one bottle per reservation.

Rum Social is located at 448 South Coast Highway in the heart of downtown Laguna Beach. The restaurant is open for dinner nightly with a daily Social Happy Hour from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m. For more information, visit https://rumsocial.com/.
